Head of Infrastructure
LEGO Digital Play will bring the LEGO brand into digital entertainment in new, innovative, and wholly-owned ways. Our mission is to ensure the LEGO Brand remains as powerfully a part of children’s lives in the coming decades as it has ever been. We aim to reach every kid on the planet, their parents, and adult fans of LEGO—and provide them with meaningful, magical, and playful new experiences.
We are at the earliest phases of this new company, offering a unique opportunity to build a new entity for the world's most beloved and trusted brand. Our culture is open, collaborative, intellectually rigorous, and creatively vibrant.
The Central Technology team is the engineering heart of LEGO Digital Play, a venture within the LEGO ecosystem dedicated to pioneering creative and joyful digital experiences. Our teams build the foundational platforms, tools, and capabilities that power LEGO's digital future. We work at the intersection of play, applied AI, and developer tooling to bring the LEGO brand to a new generation of digital builders. It's a rare opportunity to shape something from the ground up within one of the world's most loved brands.
Role Summary
As Head of Infrastructure, you will build the technical foundation LEGO Digital Play relies on, owning cloud, AI/ML, developer platform, and core reliability infrastructure. You will work closely with internal stakeholders to align priorities, make early design decisions, and help shape the team and culture in a greenfield environment. This is a newly-created, hands-on leadership role which will be based in our London HQ.
Key Responsibilities
Define and own the infrastructure strategy and roadmap across cloud foundations, AI/ML platform, developer platform plumbing, and platform reliability tooling — taking ownership of quarterly goals as the function matures.
Drive alignment on tooling, standards, and platform direction across Central Technology teams, the AI organisation, and internal studios.
Stand up the multi-cloud foundation on Google Cloud and AWS: landing zones, account and project structure, infrastructure as code (Terraform), networking, IAM, secrets management, and platform-wide observability.
Build the AI/ML platform in close partnership with the AI team — GPU orchestration and scheduling, model serving infrastructure, MLOps tooling, and inference APIs. The AI team is the primary infrastructure customer in the near term.
Deliver paved roads: an internal developer platform and shared tooling that let engineering teams and internal studios ship reliably and quickly without reinventing the basics. Prioritise self-service over ticket-driven operations from day one.
Own infrastructure-layer reliability primitives: define SLO frameworks and error-budget policies, instrument platform observability, and establish the tooling and conventions that live service and product teams depend on. (Day-to-day live operations sits with a separate Head of LiveOps function.)
Embed FinOps discipline into the infrastructure operating model — visibility, allocation, anomaly detection, and a cost-aware engineering culture — from the foundation up.
Design security and compliance controls into the cloud foundation by default: IAM least privilege, data residency, encryption at rest and in transit, audit logging, and GDPR/COPPA requirements addressed at the infrastructure layer. Partner with the Child Safety Products team wherever infrastructure controls are the mechanism.
Hire, mentor, and grow the infrastructure team — establish technical standards, engineering culture, and operating rhythm as the organisation scales.
Represent infrastructure clearly to senior leadership: surface trade-offs, risk, readiness, and investment cases to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Qualifications
Experience with infrastructure, platform, or cloud engineering, with experience at a leadership or staff-level capacity.
Deep hands-on expertise in AWS, and preferably also Google Cloud — multi-account and multi-project landing zones, Terraform at scale, networking, IAM, and containerisation.
Demonstrated experience building infrastructure from a low or zero baseline. Comfortable with greenfield, ambiguity, and revisiting early decisions quickly.
Platform thinker: invests in great developer experience, paved roads, and self-service as a first-order concern.
Strong foundation in infrastructure-layer reliability — SLO design, observability tooling, structured incident taxonomy, and error-budget frameworks.
Security- and privacy-minded: designs for child safety, data residency, and regulated consumer environments at the infrastructure layer. Familiarity with GDPR and COPPA at a systems level.
FinOps literacy: can instrument cost visibility from day one and build a cost-aware engineering culture.
Strong communicator with technical and non-technical audiences; able to influence senior stakeholders and represent infrastructure trade-offs at executive level.
Collaborative leader with a track record of driving alignment across teams with differing priorities — listens well, builds trust and consensus, and influences without relying on authority.
Hands-on enough to review architecture, contribute to designs, and occasionally ship code or configuration — this is a player-coach role, especially in the early period.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience operating both Google Cloud and AWS in production at meaningful scale.
Experience in AI/ML infrastructure: GPU orchestration, model serving (Triton, vLLM, or equivalent), MLOps tooling and experiment tracking.
Experience standing up an internal developer platform or paved-road system.
Background in brand-safe or regulated consumer ecosystems — children's products, health, fintech.
Experience in games or interactive-media infrastructure, including content and asset pipelines.
Exposure to engine or game-runtime integration at the infrastructure level (Unity, Unreal).
Experience scaling a platform team and knowing when to introduce management layers.
